Welcome to Hail Weston

Heilweston (12th century) Hailweston, Halewestan, (13th century) and Hail Weston (Modern).Hail Weston derives its name from a former name of the River Kym, the River Hail or Hale, which flows across the modern civil parish. The village once had two springs, or wells, celebrated in a poem by Michael Drayton (1563-1631), entitled the 'Holy Wells of Hailweston.', only one of these wells is marked extant on the Ordnance Survey maps of today (2010). The Church of St Nicolas in the centre of the village has a rare timber tower and a spire covered in oak shingles. The oldest part of the church dates from the 13th century with much addition and alteration in the 15th, 16th and 19th centuries. The Baptist chapel at Hail Weston once said to be the oldest in Huntingdonshire, having been founded in 1757, is now closed along with two public houses, the Post Office and the village shop but the village still has the comfort of the Royal Oak Public House. Hail Weston is one of the parishes of the District of Huntingdonshire, whose administrative centre is Huntingdon, the other principle towns being St Ives home of the Chapel on the Bridge, St Neots the largest town in the County of Cambridgeshire, the Roman town of Godmanchester and Ramsey site of the former Abbey.
